Hot News Flush! Yamaha's getting out of the CD burner Bizness
This is official, Yamaha's getting out of the CD-writer business to focus on other "more important" (read paying) business ventures. So it's final flash-in-the pan model, the Yamaha CRW-F1 CD-R/RW burner, burns not only data but CD labels using Yamaha's DiscT@2 Laser Labeling System. Text and graphic can be "tattooed" on the media's unused data surface after the data or music has been written. So you "gotta get it?"
My first burner was an external Yamaha. Great speed (it did 8X CD-Rs and 4X CD-RW when the average CD read drive maxed out at 4X). But the power supply was crap. In one year, the burner burned its power box out no less than 5 times; even when connected to the UPS! Still, it was a great tool to have. And made backup so easy.
Of course the damn thing cost a bomb to buy. And an arm 'n leg to fix. As a thumb rule, consider that CD-R media then cost about $10 at prevailing exchange rates. And CD-RW was about $25 each! Plus the error rate was high in both. Per box of 10 HP CD-Rs, I used to trash about 4.
Now I use a really cheap ($90) Samsung burner that delivers 32X CD-R and 16X CD-RW on both the old 640-650 Meg media, as well as the new 700 MB format.
How time files when your burning fun!

Nothin much is happening today. Except the guy I consult with went on and on for a whole hour about how to setup a portal system. Then he said that blogs were rubbish and a waste of time (they are; except to those who read them :). And he'd never write a blog. I don't think anyone's interested in his boring blah-blah.

New Cat Zeta Jones Virus surfaces
This is getting worse than MTV's Celebrity Deathmatch (which I really miss: the cable TV guys decided it was better to telecast some Baptist Ministry of God channel instead). Sigh! There's another new virus -- Catherine Zeta Jones. And like the similar one named after Kournikova (really really olde days Net-wise) is an annoyance.
According to UK-antivirus vendor Sophos, the Zerta-Jones virus promises some sexy images of the "actress" and affects users of the Kazaa file sharing network. As well as those people who believe in IRC.
Notice the trend: both target networks where people share information without big brother. And where you have lots of stupid new users without the sense to practice the cyber version of safe sex -- using a firewall with a regularly updated antivirus program. Who will happily click on anything that says its sexy.
Yeah! And I'm so sexy. My PC's so sexy. The way I type is so sexy......
So stay alert

Week 1 of the new site look. I'm not a real proud daddy. The images are kind jerry-built on a template. I think I gotta get a real designer to do the job. Instead of wasting time fiddling.
That's all for tonight. Maybe more later when I've had a bit of Java. And some more nicotine sticks!
